Worst case scenario... it can't boot to X and falls back to a text screen. No problem here.
As root
# telinit 3 That gets you to the right run level so X doesn't retry a start in the
middle of things.
# drakxconf
This is the tool that will let you reconfigure X (and other things too.) once tested and good.
# telinit 5
and you will be back into X just like normal.
Best case scenario. When it boots you will get a funny looking screen and need to use Mandrake control center to get back to a normal looking / working screen.
I had the best case scenario - I got a 9200 Radeon, put it in, booted and a text-graphical screen came up to let me configure the video. I only had an option for 8500 - nothing greater is in the list. Works nevertheless.
My mouse works better, too. All this time I thought it was going out and it turns out it was the video.
