Your system is using devfs unless you specifically disabled it.  devfs
is a method where the /dev directory is pretty much empty and everytime
you load a module that recognizes a device, it creates a virtual device
node in /dev for you.

First, I'd try rebooting and passing "noapic" to the kernel.  Check to
see if it has it now with 'cat /proc/cmdline'.  If you see the word
noapic in there, then it's already being done.

Second, I'd try rebooting and passing "devfs=nomount" to the kernel.  It
might (temporarily) cause things like the cdrom to not quite work right,
but you can at least see if the mouse will begin to work properly.
