Solved the problem. First I tried the option to replace the picture,
reloading the original one into the document. No go. Then I opened
Gimp and re-saved the picture, in case there was a fault. Again,
tried replace, but this time with the new picture. Then I noticed
that if I clicked on the picture just about where the problem starts
I had a small white block. Was it really not loading the new
picture? So, I deleted the frame and recreated it, putting the new
picture in. No white block, wherever I clicked. It prints fine.

Conclusion - possible bug in kword.
