looks like it's some sort of wrapper around xrandr... using that utility shows that both monitors are set at 85Hz, which ain't bad. So my crawly dim lines are probably caused by interference since the monitors are side by side. Maybe they need an AFDB :-) That would explain why there wasn't a problem when one of the machines ran XP, since it probably had a different refresh rate.
