That seems out of the question, because I had tarred them to local 
drive and then burnt them to cdrw, copied the tarballs back to HD and 
extracted the fonts. Tar is notorious for keeping permissions okay.

Sorry, what do you imply by that. What should (could) I do with this 
information? I am using Linux only since February, so I am not sure 
where this can help me.

Yes, I did some more googling and found one other similar piece of 
advice, so I commented out a line reading Load unix/:-1 and (as per 
that advice) deleted all similar looking file from /tmp and 
/home/dvg/tmp.
The result was the same as before, though.
