sorry, maybe i don't read perfect your mail. but if i understand
clearly now, you want change default color of root window if you execute
X server for example handy, right?

hm, when we look precise into srpm file of XFree86, then we can find
patch with this name: XFree86-4.2.99.3-mandrakelinux-blue.patch.bz2.
after fast check, imho this is related to your question, and this patch
sets default color of root window.

if i remember right, i'v played with this setting and again if
i remember right this can be override with system setting. but sorry,
i don't know after some researching where exactly.
my tip is somewhere in Xresources file, if it is possible to change
color of root window without patching sources..
