OK so it's fixed...

I downloaded a fresh copy, compiled and installed and it's OK on this copy as well, so to be honest I'm stumped. Oh well, at least I'm happy! I suppose that a bit of error reporting in JpegUtils.cs wouldn't go amiss in future versions, but in any case I'm happy - sorry not to be able to explain why I've had problems!
