I think this is related to the fact that Ubuntu has installed a version where the database is still located in ./gnome2/f-spot, as with an older photos.db.backup it is working. Should fix it nicely If you did not copy the f-spot file, then if you have stored all the tags into the pictures it self, you just have to re-import them.
