From the replay however it looked the lollipop man clearly jumped the gun, not just anticipated the fuel rig clearing too soon. Looked like he may have been thinking flip the sign (Brakes to Gear) and lifted it clear instead. Jensen then did what practice told him to do - pull out of the pits.

Went back to the DVR and fast forwarded to Jensen's first pitstop on lap 16. The lollipop was not lifted until "all" the crew was clear of the car and the fuel rig was disengaged. In fact the fuel rig was disengaged before the rear jack was down.

On the stop where he drove off with the rig attached (lap 30) the lollipop was lifted even before the front jack man had cleared the car! Went back and counted the frames and from the first movement upward of the lollipop to the first movement to bring it back down was only 12 frames. The speed of video is 30 frames per second so the lollipop guy reacted lifted and started to replace the stop sign within half a second. From the replay looking at the car from the front you can clearly see the fuel rig and the guys working it have not even budged when the lollipop got lifted. Sometimes you see them tugging on it to get it disengaged but even that was not happening when this occurred.

The most amazing thing about this incident however is that not only was there no fire but it did not even look like there was even a significant fuel spill. Pretty amazing considering that their fuel rigs are pressurized and not just gravity fed.

With all due respect. I expect F1 teams choreograph their pit stops and
practice them 'endlessly'. I also expect that a part of the
choreography is when the fueler begins the actions of disengaging the
fuel rig the lollypop guy give the 'go' sign. If the lollypop waits
until the fuel rig is fully detached, a second or more is added to the
pit stop. It is somewhat like line play in a football game, you go on
the snap count with every 'step' of the play choreographed for the
pulling guard to make his move and lead the ball carrier around the end.
When the choreography works, the play works and no one takes any
exceptions to the 'corners' that were cut expecting particular actions
to occur. The same with this pit stop, only the expected action -
fueler smoothly removing the fuel rig did not occur - when that happens
everyone looks like the fool.

I can just imagine what Gil said to the "lollipop" man about his
signaling Jensen to go before the fuel hose was disconnected and then
of course hitting Jensen on the head with it when he tried to get him
to stop. Certainly had the potential to be far worse than it was.

Shows the foresight that Ferrari have shown in having the back side
of the lollipop being a convex mirror so that the driver too can see
what is going on behind him while stopped. Anyone notice if any of
the other teams have a mirror on their lollipop too?
