The voltage at all the switches and connections should be the same as the battery voltage. That should be a little more than 12 volts and will drop a few tenths with use unless you have a regulator and charging system. Likely faults are a bad battery, a bad starter, a poor ground, or a chafed 12v hot wire chafing against the chassis somewhere. From what you describe, I think you have a bad ground somewhere. That's what frequently causes things to heat up. Double check all your connections. And check around the starter to make sure nothing is shorting out when you are starting the car. Typically, the bolts holding the starter to the motor create the ground for it. Make sure yours are tight. You should be able to start the car a bunch of times without the battery heating up. Battery heating up is BAD....Not knowing all the details...
I'll assume you have a known good battery? If not, replace it.
You may get suggestions of types from others on this list. I just saw a slick battery this weekend but can't remember the name. I use a small motorcycle battery on my car. - check all your connections for good grounds and no shorts (chafed wires rubbing the chassis can cause a wire to heat) - check your battery voltage while the starter motor is engaged. It will drop from 12v but not more than a few volts
good luck

from a new be. I was checking the votes on my car and found that I have 108
volts at my on off switch. My tail light switch has 11.83 volts is the right?
also my battery only starts my car 2 or 3 times before it must cool off before
working again. Is the normal.
