When I raced at Heartland in June 2005, they had a mountain of aggregate on the property, that I was told was from some area of Forbes Field, that was to be used in the repaving. What I don't know is if that aggregate was to be used for the Solo pad, the race track or both.

I did notice that the start area, was no longer black after many spinning starts, it was more brown in color, but did not appear to get any slipperier. We were told that it was durable, competition asphalt. Bill Schmidt (I was the starter when I worked heat #4) >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 06/13/06 12:31 AM >>> John, If they used the same " easy on tires" race track paving mix material as they did at AMP here in AZ (probably the same SCCA race track consultant), it has an abrupt (but only medium grip) breakaway characteristic and if a lot of cars run on it, it generates black dust that is slippery. Does that sound like the "new" Topeka that you ran on? I'm afraid that there may not be any mechanical nor chemical reason for it to ever get grippier with time. In fact, it may get more slippery since it may polish up. A lot of cars running on it also may generate ruts and certainly dust. I hope that isn't the case for all our sakes that run there, but I've heard that some race track asphalt surfaces like this are grippiest when first built and then it it downhill after that. If there are sharp rocks or rough pebbles in a pavement that become exposed as the top surface gets worn away, it might get better. However it is my guess that Topeka is a consistent mix all the way through of sand, tar, and polymers. (old ground up street rubber is a polymer) The best one can hope for is that it is clean when one runs. This is only conjecture. I have no proof of that this actually is the composition at Topeka. This is just what I suscept from knowing how AMP was built, running on AMP for a year before it was closed, and talking with Howard Duncan about Topeka's new paving plans a few years ago.
