Pretty similar story to below, but I have just converted to a 530 chain from a 520. When running the 520 I was machining a 530 Martin sprocket to width and removing case hardening from one side - the result was pretty fast wear on the sprocket during autocross use. #50 sprockets seem to line up with 530 chain. For a 5:1 ratio (autocross) the rear sprocket is not small. Sprocket specialists has a rear, hardened aluminum - split sprocket, that fit my car with no modification and is real easy to change.

From: "500 Racer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Tue, July 11, 2006 8:33 pm To: [email protected] -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I converted my NovaKar J-7B to chain in 2001 for Cal Stewart after his first race. The data suggested he was losing at least a second per lap due to belt ratcheting. The conversion was not difficult. Get a catalog from your local industrial bearing supplier. I used MARTIN brand gears for the jackshaft. Had to machine the tooth width to match the 528 chain. Any motorcycle shop can supply the rear sprocket. I ordered mine from "Sprocket Specialties". Use the very best o-ring chain you can find. Last one I bought was around 125.00. It lasted a complete season and sat in the tool box as a perfect spare. We did the same conversion to Brian Novak's car and he is still running a version of that set-up. With as good as he runs, I doubt you could say it's any slower that running a belt. Vibration is NOT an issue. We've broken wheels and rod bearings and lots of other stupid things never had a chain failure in either car to date. BTW, If you use the Martin gears, make certain to use the heat treated gears. Don't ask how I know. From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2006 18:22:18 -0400 To: [email protected] I"ve started to change my gearing in my 97 phantom going from a 3.45 to 1 to a 5.0 to 1 to run autocross. The car will light the tires up some times but other times it I can still bogg it down in my other car with the higher gearing it is next to impossible to bogg it down. Right now I hear the belt slipping from a dead stop when I really get on the gas... I was wondering what is your thoughts about going to a chain. How tight can I make the poly can it be too tight.. I was told that the poly was faster for several reasons. The poly does not have as much drag as the chain.. Also the poly does not have as much vibration. _______________________________________________ F500 mailing list - [email protected] To unsubscribe or change options please visit: http://f500.org/mailman/listinfo/f500 *** Please, DO NOT send unsubscribe requests to the mailing list! *** _______________________________________________ F500 mailing list - [email protected] To unsubscribe or change options please visit: http://f500.org/mailman/listinfo/f500 *** Please, DO NOT send unsubscribe requests to the mailing list! ***
