FWIW, this same conversation is going on over at ApexSpeed in regards
to FC and FF. FAs numbers have rebounded, but only due to the influx
of FSCCA and Pro Mazda cars. FC is on the decline; several of the CFC
guys came up with F1000 as a way to get some 'new' old cars back out on
track. The FF guys are talking about 600cc engines, Zetecs, and the
like as ways to add cars to shore up their declining numbers.
What I find interesting is that FF and F500 are, as a group, the most
vehemently opposed to any 'new' configurations in their group, while FA
and FC have taken specific steps to try to keep their classes alive.
Now, here's something to think about:
If F1000 succeeds, you can bet that F600 won't be far behind, and it
will appear attractive to new guys coming in. (Honestly, there's
nothing in a Kent 1600 OR a Rotax 493 that does anything visceral for
the bling-bling tuner set). In five years, would you rather be sharing
the track at Topeka with some Ninja engines, or would you rather sit at
home and watch the FFs sharing the track with the bike mills? To
further it, at what point might it make sense to point out that FF and
F500 already have effectively identical lap times.....if you can't beat
'em.....?
A car built in 2002 probably won't be front-row competitive in 2010
anyway, nor will it be running a 494, so does it really matter what the
next-gen mill will be? It's all about competitive racing, anyway,
right?
