Charlie,
Why not give the winners of the Regional Championships invites to the
runoffs ! Example would be the winner of the Marrs Series - run by the
WDC-SCCA Region - would get an invite and maybe also the second place
finisher with the 3rd place finisher being designated the alternate !
There's a bunch of Regional Championships run across the country that have
well run series with drivers capable of running with "the big boys" - that
don't have the $ or the crew to travel - lets say from Virginis to Florida
or Maine to New Jersey but maybe able to attend a one-shot at the Runoffs !

Subject: [F500] Get Our Numbers Up
I wish there was a way that Regional racers could get some points for their
Regional Championships by running in National races. I understand the
sound logic behind racing Regional, but wouldn't it benefit us all to get
our numbers up if there was a carrot for the Regional guys to race an
occasional National? Plus the benefits outlined by Chuck.
Thanks,
Charlie (willing to compromise on 25 lb.s for the 493)

>From a personal perspective, when I first got my National License, I
>made
the decision, that while I was going to compete in the MARRS (DC Region
regional) series I would come out an play on the Nationals that were
being
held at my home track (Summit Point at the time). Not because I had any
expectations of winning, but to find out first hand what the quick guys
were
doing. The second reason to run my 'home' National was to meet and come
to
know who the National Drivers were, as competitors and as people.
To my way of thinking, a Regional driver that does not participate in his
home tracks National is doing himself a disservice in perusing his
attempts
to become a better and more competitive driver.
The one thing I found out....National Driver are human and they don't
bite.
Come on in...the water is fine.

IMO, the best thing that F500 can do for itself is to convince its
members
to run a few more Nationals. If National racers ran just one more
National,
and a few of those who run only Regionals switched to Nationals, then we
wouldn't be having this conversation. When I was reviewing the race data
earlier this year, I looked at a bunch of Regional-National double races,
and noticed that in many classes there would be strong participation in
the
Regional, but that only a relative few of those folks would stick around
for
the National race.
I understand that part of the problem is structural...fees, licensing
requirements, etc., but that is not an issue specific to F500. However,
if
appearance is a big part of reality, then one could argue that F500
"appears" to be in decline. It may be, or the objective reality may be
that
folks are merely shifting to Regional racing, but whatever the case,
National participation is the key to controlling your own future. That's
the
bottom line.
Regards, Stan
