Bobby -- What are your noise limits? My Invader puts up 93-95 numbers both at Lime Rock and NHIS using the Aaen pipe. (well under the 100decibel limit) My lady is interested in perhaps getting her license and I had thought of letting her get her feet wet with the car in Solo II before going to the Spring drivers schools. Am I correct in thinking that there is no competiton license required for SoloII? I know your gearing is diifferent and I do have three different large gears and 6 different small gears so I might be able to cobble something up in the high threes or low fours. Or I might just leave it with the current gearing as I want her to get used to the car (braking and handling) rather than going for any wins in Solo. Incidently as an aside I raced with a young lady driver who was quite good -Katherine Lapham-- at the recent regional at Lime Rock. Someone has mentioned another new young lady driver in a different region. I think we should be talking this class up with the ladies as well as the young guys.

I guess no one noticed I sign my emails #15Fmod NER SCCA, maybe I should had Solo II Only! We are facing the noise limits you Road Race people will get hit with next. Let us just hope that Aaen can solve the problem. I sould get on his web site and see if he has anything that he has resently developed so I can put my fugly muffler as a backup only!

PS: I would guess that one of the reasons SCCA is building a Solo II pad at the new track (if built)is that we may loose Deven's or they may lower the sound again and put us out of there!

Most of these "older" F5's were legislated out of competition with the introduction of the new roll bar rule requiring a minimum roll bar thickness of 1.375" as opposed to the previous rule of 1.25". Someone chime in with the specific year ('96? '97?). Pasting on a new roll bar was the work of skilled chassis folks who knew how to extricate the old bar and insert the new (slightly more than just a welding job) without trashing the rest of the frame. The cost-benefit was marginal when considering the competition potential of the car (with but a few exceptions).

SAE cars are, as are most race cars, purpose built. They serve their purpose quite well. If used outside of their design intent (e.g., F500 racing, assuming they would pass tech) would scare the beejeezus out of me to just watch. But, given the design intent, I'd take an '85 Red Devil on a road course over a new FSAE. No insult to the "college folk" intended.

Ever look at some of these older F5's? You think a SAE looks scary!!!

Most of them are put in the trash and engines and other parts are reused. I have been told that if any are sold on the New England area, they can only be sold to former students that were in the program and/or aluminest. Also WPI brings cars to the event many times as do a few other schools, some of
which are a few years old along with the current model. I have never seen
one fail at our Solo II events only a motor problem. And our Region will
let three or four students drive them even if we have to put them in
different heats. They are fun to drive, although I drove one in a somewhat wet course, but the shifting is not as easy as everyone thinks and you shift
many more times that a car with a Hewland. I found it easier to learn to
shift a Hewland in my old FF!

The reason I have been told that they will not sell them in this part of the
country is the schools are affraid of a "Products Liability Claim" if
someone was to get hurt in the car, even if it wasn't their fault, just the bad image of a Brown U, WPI, etc being sued over racing. Many of the people
who hear of these programs do not understand that many of them go on to
design their family car.
Now you know why the American Car Companies are in trouble. Sorry Jay I
needed to get that out! When Detriot stops letting accountants like me
deside how a car is to be built, things will get better!

Sorry I got a little of the path!

well i suggest you actually look at an sae car before you even think about something like that, they are made for one day use and it shows on a lot of
them ,the thought of going more than 60 in one is just plain scary, and i
have attended many of the sae contests here in pontiac michigan i have seen em all, there aren't many that would even finish! that is definately not an
option for f500

Why are you all forgetting there are 4stroke snowmobile engines which is
the only future for F500 ten years down the road when no snowmobile company will be making two strokes. If you lived in Rhode Island near Narragansett Bay and see a jetski that is a four stroke they are now so quiet and no oil in the water. And for those of you who don't know it, they are almost the same engines as snowmobile except they are for water! I am older and maybe getting out of this in the near future, but if I was in my forties I would
be thinking 4stroke CVT Snowmobile Engines.

Also if I wanted a bike engine I would somehow find the money to go DSR or
find a school in the USA that would sell me a SAE (?) car!

Good job chuck, I couldn't have put it better my self. getting more
riders/ drivers is not going to happen by changing our cars. but by
getting out into places that have not seen or driven our cars. Doing
things like beating FF will get us noticed. (did brian have his engine
backwards) Rory
