Phil, We are talking Exhaust Gas Temperature here, not water temperature !
212 Degs won't even show on the gage. You need to get up to around 1000 degs to do any kind of accuracy test. Most if not all EGT probes are thermocouple type, which means they generate there own voltage when heated (or cooled). Information I got from Westach is that the probe resistance at room temp should be 2.5 ohms at the connector. Your gauge, if not electronic, should read 8 - 12 ohms at the back of the meter (probe disconnected). If you have the polarity correct on your ohm meter, the meter pointer will move during the ohm test. Use a good quality digital ohm meter. Info I have from Westach on checking probe/gage accuracy is to connect the probe using the same wire you would normally use when connected to the exhaust. Remove the probes from the exhaust, then holding them in some manner so you don't burn yourself, use a propane torch to get the tip of the probe hot. Connect an accurate voltmeter set MV DC range. You should get the following readings. Leave the probe connected to the meter and just connect your voltmeter to the leads at the gage. Probe temp (degs F)/ voltage (MV DC) 200 / 2.87 600 / 11.91 800 / 16.58 1000 / 21.31 1200 / 26.03 1400 / 30.70 Hold the torch steady to get a stable reading for at least 10 seconds. Do both probes. If the MV and temp readings don't match, you need to find the reason why and replace or repair as necessary.
