Jim,

I agree that Nationals is as much about the social aspects as it is about
competition, but I want to at least have the illusion of having a chance.
Gary's comments were just the icing on the cake and kind of amusing - they
certainly aren't the reason we decided not to make the trip. I can also
assure you that the "A Mod guys" haven't forgotten the people aspect of
making the pilgramage to Topeka. In fact, they were planning on going even
if their car wasn't quite good enough to win as long as they believed that
it would keep running through the week (same as me). It just doesn't make
sense to drive that far just to end up on the side lines with a broken car.

We got a very late start this year after doing a complete frame up rebuild
during the off season. The main reason for not making the trip is an engine
issue we've been chasing since late last year. We've never been able to get
even close to even EGT's (100+ degree spread) and every weekend we had
to jet down a size or two (regardless of weather conditions) to get it
running at all. By the Packwood Pro a few weeks back, we were running
200/220 jets and barely seeing 1000 on the EGT's (and way down on power).
We replaced a few bits and pieces recently and got it running a tiny bit
better, but it is still no where near where it needs to be to justify
driving 4000 miles round trip for 6 minutes of racing. We should have
rebuilt the engine months ago, but we just spent too much time chasing our
tails and there isn't time or energy to make it happen in time for Topeka.

I'm considering flying in for the Runoffs to hang out with some of the F500
gang since I now have some extra vacation time to use up.

Good luck at Nats and have a great time. I look forward to hearing about
the new surface.

Sheldon
