The first year we had our F440 the engine blew up on my second run of the first day of the Solo Nationals in 1993 (yes, it's the same car we run today). I was accelerating up the hill in Salina, KS when it just died. When we took it apart the thrust washer had broken apart, bounced around inside the case and proceeded to poke a hole in the side of the case (I believe it got caught between the crank and case and the case lost), broke a piston, and parts of it ended up on top of that piston thus beating the piston and head up pretty good, along with most every other interior surface. Since the case was broken we had to get another engine. I believe we still have the broken engine somewhere. I have the damaged piston on my shelf.

I expect the metallic beating you are seeing was the thrust washer as it
disintegrated. Kawasaki's would occasionally eat the thrust washer.

Yeah, the only thing I haven't torn apart until today is the bottom end. I
already split the crankcase.

Can you tell me how to split the crank apart?

I'm going to have my neighbor look over the crank bits and I'll take his
advice on what should be re-done. The bearings all seem to run smooth as
silk. There was a bit of crap in the bottom of each cylinder that surely
needed cleaning out. It looks as though the crankcase itself has been beaten
by metallic objects but not too badly. Near as I can tell with my uneducated
eye, the only problem is one of the con rods has a thrust washer missing
completely. I imagine that did not get put on with the re-build. Have you
got a spare one of those, the skinny one?
