OK, you got my interest going. Here is the skinny on the history of the
2 stroke:
The first two-stroke engine was a gas engine invented and built by
Etienne Lenoir <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etienne_Lenoir> in 1860. A
two-stroke diesel engine was built by Dugald Clark
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dugald_Clark> in 1878, and used a similar
cylinder head to a four-stroke diesel engine, and a supercharger
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercharger>. The gasoline two-stroke
engine, and the cylinder ports on which it depends, were invented by
Joseph Day <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Day> in 1889. These
cylinder ports were subsequently incorporated into diesel two-stroke
engines, replacing either just the inlet valves or both inlet and
exhaust valves. A great deal of development of the two-stroke engine was
done between the two World Wars, particularly by German companies such
as DKW <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DKW> and Fichtel & Sachs.
