John -

All of the Aim systems are 'almost' capable of this for autocrossing. Road
racing is easier, as they use trackside infrared beacons to separate each
lap.

My unit is set up with a push button attached to the beacon receiver plug.
With the unit turned on (continuous mode), I go to the start line, and wait
for the green flag with a finger on the button. When the flag is waved, I
press the button and hit the throttle. 'Some time' after the finish line I
press the button again. The period between button pushes is viewable as a
distinct lap. If I forget to push the button start/finish, the time is
longer but I can easily clip out the lap data.

If you wish, you can clip off the slop at the end - I measure brake
pressure, so can clip until the brake pressure rises at the end of the run,
but you could measure speed, or turns (lateral g), or some such. This is a
bit of an approximation, as is the fact that the start light is not at the
start, so you can't get precise times without a fair amount more effort (or
an infrared beacon at both lights, a lot of trouble IMHO).

And my track maps, generated by speed and lateral g's, are, with very little
tweaking, extremely good.

As the Aim software continues to improve (free downloads of updates), these
abilities get better and easier.

Are you saying you can define a start and finish line via GPS and then
the system will time your runs? If so how accurate has that been?
