What's the area of a 2" square? The answer, 4", and the area of a 2" round? 
6.28" So make it a square, but you would have less area..

cylinder design is again to allow the resistance to be progressive, so I'm
not sure what you would gain, WAIT, if you went rectangular solid and put
them in a diamond position you would have progressive and longer stroke.
