Does anyone rebuild the 494 starter motors or are they disposable items? Any good resellers?
Thanks

They take more time to set up right-but they will take immense torque-last almost indefinitely and they are clean running with no need to frequently retension.

I used mine without any trouble last year. I wondered why all the fuss over chains.

   2700+# car with
about 450+HP and an IRS with about 315mm rear tires.

OMG! That would be an incredible piece!

Interesting - has the long flat rear deck a-la the FF Swift.

Now that you mention it, I think I've noticed the same thing on my car. Good solution! I will look again and use this trick, too.

BTW, why did you switch to chain drive?

JV

John,
There are 4 reasons I switched to chain drive.1) Sprockets and chains
are a little cheaper than cogs and belts. 2) This list told me to go to
chain for 5.5 to 1 ratio, when I bought my car. 3) I was told that the
belt would not stay put on a 20 to 25 tooth cog. 4) My car stripped the
teeth off the belt on my first run of the second day at Solo Nats 2004.
5) The Red Devil that I have has the countershaft sandwiched between the
engine and axle. The horrible way that RD set up the car is : you slide
the countershaft forwards or backwards for adjustment. When you make an
adjustment, one belt gets tight while the other gets looser. I figured
that the chain would be a little more tolerant of incorrect adjustment
than the belt. So far, my guesswork has worked fantastic. I want to go
to a 4 link setup that will allow me to adjust the rear axle seperate
from the countershaft adjustment. Of course, if I go to the 4 link, I
may be going back to belt drive. It seems that 4 link cars do not
tolerate chain drive very well, due to the extra movement of the axle.
I have soloed my car for 2 full seasons and havent had to do anything to
the chain, other than lube it. Both sprockets still look like new.

Thanks Jeff and Lee! Lee's site is easier to navigate, but Jeffs has a
feature I really like (part #s). A lot of the Ebay folks will sell a Ski
Doo part and only give a part #, not a model application. The
Ronnies.com site will help with that.

try ronnies.com
once you're on the site, select "Purchase OEM parts", the select
Ski-Doo, the select "OEM Parts Fiche" from the list on the left side.
You can then select a specific model and year. I think the site used to

be easier to navigate, but I guess this is what they call progress.

Speaking of belts/cogs, does anyone have a mail order outfit that has
good prices and availability on the polychain cogs? I am trying to build
up my collection of contacts for the coming race season ;)

John,
There are 4 reasons I switched to chain drive.

Sounds like my belt setup is best for me. What a lousy adjustment setup you have!

Yes, I feel like the belt/chain debate parallels the old Ford vs Chevy
debate. Neither 1 is obviously "the" choice, both have strong and weak
points. Enjoy your belt, and more importantly, enjoy your race car.

The recent posts about ronnies.com got me looking at the 493 microfiche, so now I have a question. What is included with a "short block" from Ski Doo?

  Thanks, Cory
