Used race car - $3500
Test and tune day at the track - $50 each
Having son kick Dad's a$$ - priceless
That's the way Super Bowl Sunday went.
We took the snowmobile on wheels to the Emergency Vehicle Operations
Center in Zachary LA for a test and tune day. This event was for
advanced drivers so there were many National level competitors there.
Keep in mind, I had never driven the car, and Lee 5 had never even
driven autocross.
We started the day by practicing on the slalom course (15 cones!) and
the high-speed transition course. This allowed us to learn the basics of
the car. We skipped the skid pad since we thought that was just for the
"drifter" type drivers. After lunch, a full course was setup with
timing. The course was a combo of slaloms, high-speed gates and TWO skid
pad type corners.
I ran my first three runs with times of 53.7, 51.6, and 50.212. Then my
son went out. He ran a 55.3, 53.?, and then ripped off something in the
48s due to skipping half a turn. There was no way I was going to give
him that, so I sent him out for a fourth run. He beat me by a second
with a 49.154! This from a newbie! (Of course I think it was the
excellent car prep performed by Dad...yeah, right). One of the
instructors said my son could knock off two more seconds if he learned
to slalom.
That made the whole day worth it!
Overall, we had a few cars run faster than us in the 47-48s (remember,
these are Nationals drivers/cars). There was one Civic running in the
46s!! A V-8 powered RX7 only beat us by half a second. We were easily
beating new Mitsu Evolutions. So I don't feel too bad about our first
time out. We can only get better.
