I'd forget the 4-stroke snowmobile motor,as it would be twice as much $$ than the Rotax, and thats if you could get one of the manufactures to build them for the class. GOOD LUCK! The 4-stroke Yamaha is pretty cool with the rear exit exhaust and front mounted carbs, at 1000cc and 120 HP. Just some ideas. (1) Keep the class as is, Ski-Doo will make parts for a long time for the 494/493. Just spread the word to get guys out and race their cars (Nationals). (2) Maybe we should allow a stock 600cc bike engine. IMHO we should allow cheap rebuildable non adjustable shocks, and a independent rear suspension with a cheap spool. My reason for the IRS, I was told by some of the best sprint car builders that the center to center distance needs to be over 20" to keep the chain from flying off. Thats why they put the engine along side of the driver. This would need to be investigated further before a solid axel were used. Allow 10" or 13" wheels, maybe add 6" to the wheelbase for taller drivers but keep the same width( 55") The limiting factor would be weight, start out at 950lbs, adjust as needed. I think they could run with the F500 class like the FIRA cars or the F4 cars from Canada. What this does for our class is allows a newer car to be built to run in our current class and should cater to the karters. I would like to see this car built to as close to F500 specs, that way the current F500 builders could easily build these cars, and maybe keep out the F1000 builders, ( there is talk about building F600 cars from current F1000 specs on Apexspeed website. (3) Another idea would be to find a 2-stroke engine builder like PSI or Engine-Tech to build engines for the class. This would eliminate the worrys about engines no longer in production. I know this sounds like the AMW days all over, but one would have to do some research and make sure it would work for our application. This could be a costly adventure but would give us good reliable power plants. We could have the motor built with cylinders with the exhaust ports exiting rearward (ease of making pipes fit). change rule! (4) I had brought this up before, we could go with the run what you brung 500cc. Run any 500cc snowmobile engine Rotax, Yamaha, Polaris and Arctic Cat Could be a cheap way to get into F500 You can buy the whole sled for $1500.00 or less. These are only ideas as I'm just trying to help save the class, If this class dies I'll run regionals until there is nobody to race against. After that who knows, all the other classes are out of my price range. Thanks for listening Rick Eskola #04RedDevil

Without the CVT based snowmobile drive train, as others have pointed out, our class becomes redundant with other formula cars. But a 4-stroke would need more displacement, hence probably more cylinders to make the same power. For example, "In 2001, Arctic Cat had the first modern 4-stroke sled on the market. Essentially, it's a Pantera 2-stroke touring model fitted with a 4- stroke, 658cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 3-cylinder. Thanks to intake and exhaust improvements, it's rated at 53 hp for 2003, a 17 percent increase. More recently, from Yamaha "The new RX-1 snowmobile is powered by the same 4-stroke, 998cc, 4-cylinder, DOHC, 5-valves- per-cylinder, liquid-cooled Genesis Extreme engine that powers the award-winning Yamaha YZF-R1 sportbike. The biggest difference is that the motorcycle engine is now fuel-injected and develops 152 hp at 10,500 rpm, while the snowmobile version uses four Mikuni BSR37 carburetors for a peak of 145 hp at 8300 rpm." Has anyone explored whether any current 4-stoke snowmobile engines of comparable power to our current engines would fit in our cars without major mods?
