Chuck and John No need to blame either group. The bottom line is there was no testing done. The motor is faster as shown by Clint's leading the Runoffs the last two years even with the added 50lbs. New track records at every track in the se.Leading the sprints last year the length of the front straight by the first lap.And that was with our first pipe for the 493. It took almost two years to get the right pipe ,which we ran at the runoffs for the first time. Then all the long hours to get the clutches right, a trip out to some deserted road and bingo 3 seconds faster. From 12th to 2nd in one lap.
We have been doing this for years and its still hard to dial in the clutches. That goes away with the bike motors. As jack suggested, some dyno/track testing has to be done. I'm not sure a stock 600cc motor will out-perform the fast 493/494's, but if we can get 110 hp and a 6 speed gear box it would be a good place to start. As for the 493 engine failures, unbenown to us, the early 493 motors sold by Tony Murphy had a lower output oil pump. All of his motors were 2001 model years. In 2002 Rotax changed the pump. We picked up a used one from Olsen's which was out of a 2002 model. It has a different pump. It delivers all most twice the oil. After a National race we would add appoximately 13 ounces to fill the tank, now it is 23 ounces. Back to the top, no testing was done on the 493. Most of the r / d was done by Dolphin Motorsports, and at our expense! Why was the 2001 model year chosen when it wasn't legal untill 2004? Why was Tony not aware of the oil pump change! ? He knew where and how these motors were going to be used. Q pushed these motors thru to sell some cars, but never campaigned 1 on his team cars. Tony sold them because he bought a bunch early on. Legalizing this motor without the proper r / d and the lack of product knowlege by the seller and then adding 50 lbs doomed the 493. Jim ps I have a bench full of parts like the one in photo. >_____________________________ [demime 1.01d removed an attachment of type image/pjpeg which had a name of f 1000 and 493 broken parts 3 13 2007 008.jpg] ________________________________ FormulaCar Magazine - A Proud Supporter of Formula 500 The Official Publication of Junior Formula Car Racing Subscribe Today! www.formulacarmag.com or 519-624-2003 _________________________________ _______________________________________________ F500 mailing list - [email protected] To unsubscribe or change options please visit: http://f500.org/mailman/listinfo/f500 *** Please, DO NOT send unsubscribe requests to the mailing list! ***
