Since Jim Elder has now spoken publicly about this serious 493 problem, here is
the rest of the story:

We have experienced oil starvation issues with our 493's bought from Tony
Murphy. Some of the symptoms have been:
1. Seized, or quickly worn out, crankshaft rod or wrist pin bearings
2. Scuffing of the pistons
3. Not using a minimum of 5 ounces of oil for every gallon of gas used during a
race - per Brad Hulings.

We have recently discovered (accidentally when we bought a sled 493 after
buying Tony's motors) that there are two different oil pumps. We determined by
running each one for 6 minutes (with an electric drill) and measuring the total
oil output for each that one pumped twice as much oil as the other. The bad
oil pump came on the 493's from Tony and were from a 2001 sled - it is stamped
with a "L7" on the throttle lever. The good oil pump came from a 2002 sled and
is stamped with a "02". We have already replaced the bad oil pump with a good
one and have noticed a marked improvement in the oiling area over the last 3
Nationals. You now see a slight film of oil on the plug and we are now using
close to 5 oz. of oil for every gallon of gas burned per Brad Hulings.
Personally, I suspect that Tony randomly picked one sled motor - a 2001 - to
sell to us and did not know about the different outputs for each of the pumps.

Jim
