Dear friends, Steve and I have the burden to report to you about the tragic death of a DEAR friend and fellow racer, Owen Nelson. Owen passed away on Monday from a heart attack. As many of you know, Owen lost his precious wife Lorna to cancer two years ago, so now they are together. Owen leaves behind two sons, Daniel and Christopher.
You'll remember Owen, he was the guy with the white beard and not much hair on top who raced a red/black Red Devil in F500 with IRDC and SCCA. He called his team Road Kill Racing, and he had a tire tread on his helmet. The story goes that Owen got run over by a go-kart during a race back in the 80s, and the guy left tire tracks on his back and helmet..... Owen drove a Showroom Stock Pinto in the 1970s, and won the Rose Cup in 1978. It didn't matter what type of car Owen drove, he was fast and smooth. He always had a smile for everyone and really treasured life. We're totally devastated. For folks who might be interested, there is a service in Puyallup on Sunday from 1-5. Contact us offline for details. For those of you running the Rose Cup Races this weekend, raise a glass to Owen and make a clean pass in his honor in the chicane. Please forward this to someone in IRDC, so they can report it in their newsletter.
