"Did you read Beryl Markham's book, West with the
Night? ...She has written so well, and marvelously
well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a
writer. I felt that I was simply a carpenter with
words, picking up whatever was furnished on the job
and nailing them together and sometimes making an
okay pig pen. But this girl, who is to my knowledge
very unpleasant and we might even say a high-grade
bitch, can write rings around all of us who consider
ourselves as writers ... it really is a bloody
      wonderful book." Ernest Hemingway.

This book is a study of British imperialism during

Natal, the party arriving in Cape Town on 6th
February 1835. They were instructed to keep a daily
journal for submission to the Board. Delayed by act
of war they only arrived in Port Natal on 21st
December 1835. Champion's diary starts on this date.
Dingane was never a trustworthy person and his
attitude to the missionaries changed almost daily.
Champion's diary is a valuable personal insight into
      Dingane's despotic rule.

In the summer of 1915 the key to success in Central
Africa lay in the overwhelming German naval supremacy
on Lake Tanganyika. How this was challenged by two
motor boats, commanded by an eccentric naval officer,
that were hauled 3000 miles overland from Cape Town
by steam traction engines and ox trains is the story
of one of the strangest naval operations conducted
anywhere by the British Royal Navy.

Excellent photographs taken at a time when Africa
was relatively unspoiled. The author's route took him
from Mombasa past Nairobi to Lakes Naivasha & Nakuro,
with diversion to Fort Hall and beyond to Meru.
Interesting advice on equipping and preparing a
similar expedition. The photographic kit comprised a
huge reflex camera, plates were developed in camp.

inhabitants, but is mostly of wildlife.

The author traces the history of game hunting from
its earliest beginnings. He touches on great African
tribal chiefs, nomadic Voortrekker parties, hunting
figures like Cornwallis Harris, Selous and Oswell as
well as game conservation, safari-style slaughter and
the impact wild animals have made on South African
      English imaginative prose and poetry.

Not a facsimile edition. Some editing of archaic
words, but retaining original names for places,
people, wildlife. The consummate hunter's hunter,
Harris slaughtered game in quantities that no one
else was ever able to match - mainly because in later
years the game had been decimated by the predations
of many more hunters. His pictures are reproduced
      full-page and are very attractive.

the period, with many superb photographs, not
considering the effort to carry huge cameras through
the bush, developing in the camp, and the dangers of
      the wild game.

"Predators are the best wildlife managers," writes
George Schaller. They weed out the sick and old and
keep herds healthy and alert. Yet the large predators
of the world have been and are still being
exterminated because they are thought to harm
wildlife. Schaller's award-winning work, based on
three years of study in the Serengeti National Park,
describes the impact of the lion and other predators
on the vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle
for which the area is famous.

and hunting game in East Africa, Schillings captures
the essence of the African landscape and its people
with his brilliant, early snapshots. (The first
volume) concerns a general view of the region, with a
brief history of the encroachment of civilization on
the African wild and an interesting, if oddly placed,
chapter on sport and nature in Germany. (The second
volume) includes chapters on hunting elephant, rhino,
and lion with additional sport after leopard, eland
and other antelope. There is a remarkable photograph
