---------------------------------------------------------------------- The Learning Kingdom's Cool Fact of the Day for October 4, 1999 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- How fast can a kangaroo move? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The fastest kangaroos are the giant red kangaroos (Macropus rufus), which are also the largest kangaroos and the longest jumpers on flat ground. They can reach a top speed of 64 kph (40 mph), leaping up to 13 meters (42 feet) in each jump. While jumping along at high speed, they hold up their tails for balance, and hold their small paws to their chests. When they come to a stop, the tail goes down to the ground in back, and they rest with a solid three-point stance. Red kangaroos live in the dry central part of Australia. They form groups called mobs that may contain up to a hundred individuals. The males are called "boomers" and the females, which are bluish in color, are called "blue fliers."
