Language changes have a destabilizing effect on the code base -- I'd like to avoid that because right now I'm actually trying to fix a ton of bugs in the core and improve performance. We've been adding and changing language features all year and I haven't spent enough time tightening the screws. For this reason I'd like to avoid language changes, except for the ones I listed, until the year draws to a close. If you look at the binaries page of the web site, you'll see we haven't had binary builds on Windows for 4 days due to failing tests, 2 days on the other main platforms, and over a month on OpenBSD/x86.64. Furthermore the Mac OS X/PPC port is out of date and needs updates. There have been regressions on some benchmarks, and the full test suite is taking so long that on the older machines that we use to test 32-bit x86 *BSD, its timing out after 4 hours. This is the type of thing we should be focusing our efforts on.
