This is mentioned at

possible workaround that might work for you. I believe the problem
occurs with any OpenGL application in Compiz. I've also seen reports
on the 'net about OpenOffice having issues there.

It's kind of ironic that Compiz uses fancy OpenGL effects to make your
windows quiver but the only program that it can run without issues is
xterm :-)
