GTK merged XInput2 functionality at the end of May, so it might be possible;
I haven't looked at it yet. Ideally I would like to be able to select on the
root window as to not tie the input to any particular window. This seems to
be possible using the XInput2 extension directly, but I've run into a few
issues and some things that work but I don't know how or why.
