Hello,

I am currently running Fedora 27 linux, and have noticed that when I start
fail2ban the relevant chains are not added to iptables. This used to work fine
with Fedora 26 (and before). I only have one jail configured, the provided
'sshd' jail.

If I remotely access to the ssh port (with an invalid userid), then I can see
the attempts being made via journalctl, and upon 5 attempts the chain is then
added (and the IP address blocked). I have disabled the use of firewalld
completely, so nothing should be interfering with iptables other than fail2ban.

The problem is that one of our regular server checks is to check the iptables
output (iptables -nL) and look for the 'f2b-' chain(s). If the chain is not
present then a message is issued to the sysadmin saying that iptables is
running but fail2ban is not. The servers are running fail2ban 0.9.7, and the
chains are added when fail2ban is started, so no problems for now. However, I
run the same check on my Fedora PC, and get a regular notice that fail2ban is
not running because the chain is not added to iptables despite restarting
fail2ban.

Anyone any thoughts about this?

Fail2ban version is 0.10.0.

Thanks,

John.
