attacks. Is it possible that I missed some necessary steps to make fail2ban

the "man pages" after having installed fail2ban.

I do not know MacOS, but I might be able to help a little while you wait for a
better answer.
Now that you have installed the software, I think that your next stage is to configure
it. Have a look at http://www.fail2ban.org/ and perhaps the "HOWTO" section.
