At the wordpress level I use Wordfence which is a WAF (Web Application

such attacks using fail2ban?

I'm using the apache-auth jail and I block access to xmlrpc.php, wp-login.php, and wp-json in my Apache config to all but local and LAN users. I'm using WordPress as a website, not a blog, so it doesn't have logins for remote users.
