Title: Dana's response to Akasha's questions
I met the senior acarya but interviewed the junior acarya - and he's the
pompous ass.  Regarding my assessment of traveling in planes, etc., a
brief note.   Yes, definitely it is against the traditional parameters of
the Shankaracaryas to travel in "ships" (note that here an airplane is
called a hawa jahaz, an "air ship") or otherwise cross oceans, so they
generally don't do it.  I personally applaud the Kanchi acarya for riding
in planes and other vehicles.  He's a pragmatist, and like the Dalai Lama
in not willing to let traditon hold him back from being most effective in
his duties.  One point: since he is arguably not even a Shankaracharya
(none of the amnaya piths see him this way - and I just spoke with
Sringeri acarya about this point), it's debatable that he needs to follow
protocol anyway.  YOu see the point.

A bottom line that I wish to make:  believing that Shankaracaryas are
above human error is generally a very silly position to take.  There is
ample history to show their involvement in politics.  They are zamindars,
landowners, and they have financial interests to watch out for; there is
much worldly pressure on them and it is impossible to always avoid a wrong
choice.
