pompous ass. Regarding my assessment of traveling in planes, etc., a
brief note. Yes, definitely it is against the traditional parameters of
the Shankaracaryas to travel in "ships" (note that here an airplane is
called a hawa jahaz, an "air ship") or otherwise cross oceans, so they
generally don't do it. I personally applaud the Kanchi acarya for riding
in planes and other vehicles. He's a pragmatist, and like the Dalai Lama
in not willing to let traditon hold him back from being most effective in
his duties. One point: since he is arguably not even a Shankaracharya
(none of the amnaya piths see him this way - and I just spoke with
Sringeri acarya about this point), it's debatable that he needs to follow
protocol anyway. YOu see the point.
A bottom line that I wish to make: believing that Shankaracaryas are
above human error is generally a very silly position to take. There is
ample history to show their involvement in politics. They are zamindars,
landowners, and they have financial interests to watch out for; there is
much worldly pressure on them and it is impossible to always avoid a wrong
choice.
