I don't know
Mark. I've heard MMY present it both
ways: as a
very refined substanced produced by the
body and as
something created external to the body.
Probably
both, as Rudrani has pointed out. If the body
produces it
I can imagine some clever yogi/seer
figuring out
how to make it in the gross realtive.

Peter,
There’s a new one on me: Soma as “something
created external to the body”. That would be another (a separate)
candidate for Soma, and does not sound like the external Soma mentioned in the
Rig Veda.
