You are right in saying that the happiness one experiences at having
learned TM is the important thing. Maharishi has always said
that "even a sick man can open a health food store" (in answer to
complaints about the character and intelligence of TM teachers), so
even if it were true that MMY was "power-hungry" (he's already got
all the power, no hunger possible), it would be irrelevant.

What is relevant is that MMY is out-of-touch, something he
acknowledged when he left India seeking expertise in the West:

The fact that MMY has still not found competent managers is just a
function of the stupidity and brutality that characterizes the
Kaliyuga. It's not realistic to expect a Hindu monk to have the
social engineering skills necessary to popularize a meditation
technique -- that takes competent people conversant with culture of a
particular country, and those people will someday step forward and
make the TM movement the mass movement it deserves to be, and who
cares how MMY is remembered? He certainly does not:

MMY's commentary on the Gita Ch.6,v.30: "[the enlightened
man]...lives in the realm of universal existence. He moves on earth
and he lives in the land of God, in the divine ground of Being far
above human vision and far beyond human thought."
