Rick,

I agreed with these statements entirely. Anyone familiar with Chandogya
and Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, and Shankara's commentaries on these and
other texts, is very familiar with MMY's "new" spin on things. It is all
very old wine in new SCI bottles. Furthermore, as I've mentioned before,
the TM technique is widely practiced in India. For example, come here to
Banaras and interview Dandi swamis, as I've spent the last seventeen years
doing. Their primary practice is "Omkar," repeating Om. They must do it
21,600 times per day with a mala but at other times they simply close
their eyes and repeat it without counting or concentrating - they settle
into the nirguna state of brahman by doing this and rest in laya. Also,
when they initiate householders, this is a commonly perscribed practice -
especially for people who lack the concentration for mala practice. I've
listened to hundreds of Dandis describe the practice and, as an old TM
teacher, I can tell you it's identical.

all the best from Banaras,

Dana
