My wife was specifically told that she should NOT try to be a vegetarian without being extremely careful. It was recommended she eat specific meats. The actual trend to vegetarianism came from Jainism and sutric Buddhism, not Ayurveda. It's largely a dieatary application of ahimsa. "no harm".
