I would suspect the true reason was that he has always wanted to keep
the TMO "scientific" ("Vedic science") and to not be associated in any
way--even if deceit was necessary--with traditional Hinduism. TM'ers
having deity statues, or god, forbid shiva-lingams--would definitely
give "outsiders" a less commercially exploitable impression.
