Considering past history, I would bet serious money that the
crowns are gold-plated.  As many in his culture do, M combines the
desire for fancy outer appearance and desire for spending as
little as possible when dealing with accoutrement of the
relative.

I predict they're brass coated with really thin gold.  Fingerprints will
start showing through in a few months if I'm right.
