Claudio is absolutely right about British scholars trying to revive India's interest in the Vedic culture. It had originally  been lost during and after the Mogul invasion when Muslims tried to erase anything Hindu in India. British scholars made efforts to revive and understand  the Vedic literature, they just didn't have a Maharishi to work with them. And while the British may have been unwanted guests in India they did a lot for the Indian people and left that country in a far better state  than if they had never been there.
