It's certainly far from original. :-) As far as I can tell, the relationship of the authors of HBHG with real historical researchers is the same as the relationship of Dan Brown to the HBHG authors. Both ripped off other people's work shamelessly. Are there legends that say this? You betcha...have been for centuries. There have been Magdalene cults in the south of France since shortly after the death of Christ. I've even seen her skull, which is preserved in a cathedral down there...she's looked better. But are any of these legends facts, whether the legends are discovered by real historical researchers or the HBHG authors or by Dan Brown? No one has a clue.
