I think you're misleading here. Even using gasoline to feed a fuel cell (which I haven't heard any significant amount of research on) would be WAY cleaner than burning gasoline directly. A fuel cell would produce no carbon monoxide nor any sulfur dioxide or other sulfur compounds.
