I'm sure it is/was a difficult situation for them. You
are a serious research scientist, but you're burdened
either consciously or unconsciously with the a prior
assumption that TM is the "best thing" for any
situation or problem. The implicit agenda becomes
supporting this "best thing" party line rather than
pursuing where the data leads. I posted some time ago
about this. A friend of mine was in the MIU
neuroscience doctoral program when a Governor
researcher presented a pilot study indicating that
systematic muscle relaxation was more effective in the
treatment of migraines than TM was. He said the entire
class was aghast at this result: questioning the
methodology, his motives, etc., etc.. It really is
quite silly to assume that TM can solve all
physiological, medical, social, spiritual and
financial problems. But this is the the implicit
belief that most of us were suckled on. It's just pure
silliness and demonstrative of cultish thinking that
the human psyche is so capable of falling into. I see
human beings as collectively quite ill. Profoundly
neurotic at best.
