What would it take to change you? Most traditions seem to teach that there is a need for the individual to find their way back by themselves with maybe a guru type acting as a guide. Some desire or action or attachment got us here and we need to know what that is in order to be free from it's blinding influence. You have to wake up from your own dream. I think we have been given everything we need to know, over and over again, but something seems to be missing. Could it be willingness? How can someone else provide that for you? Maybe you are just not tired of the cycle of birth and death yet. How many lifetimes does it take to get fed up with the whole thing? Infancy, youth, middle age, old age, death--infancy, youth, middle age, old age, death--infancy, youth, middle age, old age, death-- infancy, youth, middle age, old age, death--infancy, youth, middle age, old age, death--infancy, youth, middle age, old age, death-- infancy, youth, middle age, old age, death--infancy, youth, middle age, old age, death. The whole time failing to find something that will give you lasting fulfillment. Some job, some love, some adventure, some fame, some sport, something that doesn't fade or change or die or become boring or pointless. How many lives before you realize that there really isn't anything new under the sun? 1,000? Imagine going through this process of life a thousand times.
