I have heard him refer to his vows, or at least generally to the vows of a
Brahmachari, but we don't really know whether he took vows, and if he did,
whether he made them to himself or in a formal initiation with Guru Dev.
It's my understanding that Brahmacharya vows aren't binding for life, unlike
Sannyasi vows, so he didn't necessarily break them. I heard he once told
Jerry Jarvis that had he known he could have gotten enlightened as a
householder, he would have become one. Had he not been a public figure, he
might have switched from a Brahmachari's lifestyle and dress to a
householder's in a normal way, but given his circumstances he may have
decided that would have been too impractical from a pr standpoint.
