Exactly. The appear to have been around a LONG time... Far longer than modern religions and modern deitites. Mind you,that doesn't mean that the association of bija and deity is wrong, merely that it is a modern interpretation of things. Assuming that there IS a special effect from using specific mantras during TM that is in-line with what is claimed by some, we could just as easily claim that it is the physiological effect that gave rise to the religious interpretation. In fact, that's pretty much what MMY and others have said about it, although they think the religious issues and physiological issues are one and the same.
