I have had a subscription to the New Yorker magazine for the past 10 
years and, when not too busy with work, will read it from cover to 
cover religiously each week.

The one thing I NEVER miss are the cartoons which are the first 
thing I read when I get a new issue.  I think they are the best 
feature of the magazine.

Well, about 7 weeks ago, they started a new feature: the cartoon 
caption contest...and you don't have to either have a subscription 
or buy a copy to participate.

They provide you with the cartoon and you must provide the caption.  
Sounds very simplistic but I must tell you I have gotten addicted to 
it.  They start a new contest each week and I find myself spending 
all my spare time dreaming up and -- yes! -- actually researching 
possibilities for captions!

You can't really participate in the contest if you're looking for a 
big prize payoff because all the winner gets is a signed copy of the 
cartoon he has captioned (I don't even know if it's the 
original!)...so you do it for the fun!
